New-look National Curriculum website goes live (15/02/2010)

This week sees the launch of the National Curriculum website, which now includes the new primary curriculum and a range of tools and information to support it, including:
• an interactive video tour of the site's highlights
• a short introductory guide to the new primary curriculum
• a tool to help teachers design and plan their own curriculum
• an interactive tool which allows teachers to view selected curriculum areas side-by-side
• new case studies which show how schools have used their curriculum to make real improvements in outcomes for their learners

The website is a big step forward in making the new primary curriculum come to life for headteachers and the school workforce, and makes the curriculum easily accessible for all. Can citizenship education promote democracy and Britishness? A survey of trainee teachers attitudes on the purposes of citizenship education. (04/08/2009)

The teaching of democracy has been an objective of citizenship education since its inception (QCA 1998) and so we thought it was timely to explore the extent to which this goal had been embraced within initial teacher education (ITE). But this project was prompted by the growing presence of the topic of ‘Britishness' and national identity in political discourse at the highest level, which has been accompanied by a number of governmental initiatives to emphasise the idea of British citizenship.    Click link for full report:

My Money, My rights (12/03/2009)

The Citizenship Foundation has teamed up with Abbey to produce My Money, My Rights a fun pocket sized guide to money for teenagers. Based on the award-winning Young Citizen's Passport, My Money, My Rights explores legal issues surrounding money, with chapters focusing on Banks and Building Societies, Spending and Student Finance. It provides concise, easy to use advice on everything from what to do if you get into debt to avoiding internet scams. The guide has initially been distributed to 10,000 students in 5 locations in England and Scotland, along with 2 specially written lesson plans (mapped on to the PSHE and Citizenship curricula at Key Stage 4) to encourage teachers to use My Money, My Rights in the classroom.  Click here to down load lesson plans.

An Opportunity to be seconded to Cambridge (05/02/2009)

It should be of interest to masters level citizenship teachers, ex PGCE students with an interest in RE / Values Education, and citizenship mentors in schools.
It is an opportunity to come to Cambridge on a secondment for a term and to live in college with expenses paid. It is possible to go home also during this time, and to spread the days out over a year part-time. The successful applicant will be able to carry out research in their own area of interest, and be supervised by either Dr. Hilary Cremin or other academics with specialisms in the area. It could be used to kick start a research career, or to get experience of teacher education at HE level.

Professor Sir Bearnard Crick (19/12/2008)

We are deeply sorry to have to report that Prof Sir Bernard Crick died this morning in Edinburgh after a short illness. He will be a great loss to the cause of citizenship education both in Britain and internationally and we are particularly saddened to lose such a strong supporter of CITIZED. We will be publishing a review of his life in the New Year and we will institute the Sir Bernard Crick Lecture at our international conferences starting in Hong Kong in 2009.

Short film competition: exploring learner voice (23/10/2008)

Play Your Part: A new Active Citizenship toolkit for teachers (02/09/2008)

The Academy for Sustainable Communities (ASC) and CSV have developed an online active citizenship toolkit that supports teachers to encourage pupils to play an active role in community projects - http://citizenship.ascskills.org.uk/

The Play your Part website includes ideas, resources, activities and teaching aids designed to raise awareness of sustainable communities, inspire young people to play a part in improving their communities and develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to devise and run successful citizenship projects.

The appointee will be responsible for developing and supporting research citizenship education, conducting a significant research project, submitting article manuscripts or book proposals for publication, giving presentations and / or seminars and submitting proposals for internal and external research funding. He/she will also provide support to a major international citizenship education research project jointly conducted by HKIEd and the University of Hong Kong. The Big Conversation (19/07/2007)

‘The Big Conversation 2007' is a national schools competition to enable KS3 students to explore the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade in the context of modern day issues. Young people will work together in their schools to develop journalistic projects in response to one of the following questions:

* How and why should Britons commemorate the transatlantic slave trade?
* How can Britons learn from this history and celebrate a modern society with a diverse heritage?

HIlary Claire - 1941 - 2007 (19/07/2007)

Hilary Claire, who has died as a result of a tragic riding accident, was the inspiration and organiser behind the primary strand of the CitizED website. She was the founding member of PENAC (primary educators network for the advancement of citizenship) - a network of teacher educators who provided material for the primary strand. QCA consultation on GCSE criteria (16/07/2007)

QCA is consulting on the GCSE criteria for Citizenship. You can have your say on the criteria for the exam and the structure of assessment. It proposes a cut in coursework - or Controlled Internal Assessment as it is now called - from 40% to 25%. There are two alternatives for all GCSE courses: 25% or 60%. What you you think?

The Governance of Britain (09/07/2007)

A green paper - 'The Governance of Britain' - was launched by Gordon Brown on 3 July 2007. Among other proposals the green paper suggests that the Government will:
initiate an inclusive process of national debate to develop a British statement of values; . work with Lord Goldsmith to conduct a review of British citizenship; . launch a Youth Citizenship Commission, looking at citizenship education, ceremonies and the possibility of reducing the voting age; and . consult on the current guidance on flying the Union Flag from government buildings and Westminster Parliament. NFER Research Highlights Challenges Facing Citizenship Education in Schools (18/06/2007)

The latest report from the DfES-funded Citizenship Education Longitudinal Study was recently published. Providing an overview and update on the state and status of citizenship education in Secondary schools in England, it sets out key recommendations to ensure its future success as a curriculum subject. The recommendations are positioned within current debates about citizenship and diversity and the relationship of citizenship to national strategies concerning participation and personalised learning.

CitizED Papers Presented in Japan (20/03/2007)

Professor Jon Davison and Andrew Peterson recently visited Japan to present papers on behalf of CitizED. The papers were presented at symposiums in Tokyo (8th January) and Hiroshima (11th January), and provided an opportunity for CitizED to highlight the important development of Citizenship Teacher Education in England, as well as its role in strengthening the provision of Citizenship in schools. Certificate for the Teaching of Citizenship (24/06/2006)

Following the successful pilot of the Certification of the Teaching of Citizenship evaluated by OfSTED, the Department has approved a roll out of the continuing professional development programme. The programme will help teachers improve the effectiveness of the teaching and leadership of citizenship and raise standards of attainment and achievement. J8 Global Citizenship Programme (12/06/2006)

The J8 website offers teachers free downloadable factsheets and lesson plans
on global issues from poverty to climate change to infectious diseases. There are also details on how young people from your school can win a chance to represent their country at the Junior Summit 2007 in Germany -the official youth event of the G8. Last year the young people had a 45 minute audience with all eight world leaders!

NQT in-service support programme announced (01/03/2006)

citizED and ACT are providing 9, one day workshop events around the country for NQT's in citizenship education. The events take place during April-June 2006. Each event will be led by two tutors who are expert in citizenship education. Registration is free to NQT's and lunch will be provided. citizED is pleased to announce that the second issue of 'International Journal of Citizenship and Teacher Education is now published. The 6 articles show the rich tapestry of initiatives and thinking that exist in the contested and increasingly significant field of citizenship education. International Conference - Citizenship Teacher Education (12/09/2005)

Fifty leading academics in citizenship education and teacher education from around the world (e.g. Japan, USA, Australia, Hong Kong, Europe) came together for a very successful major international conference at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, 19-21 July 2005. Sponsored and organized jointly by UK-based citizED and OISE/UT (CTL, CIDE, TLC), the conference keynotes, paper presentations, and panels discussed current, key developments in research, policy, practice and research in citizenship and teacher education across the world at national, regional and international levels and explored significant possible future initiatives in citizenship education and teacher education. Launch of citizED E-Journal (06/09/2005)

CitizED is delighted to announce the publication of volume 1 number 1 of the International Journal of Citizenship and Teacher Education (www.citized.info/ijcte). The Journal was launched at a highly successful conference at the University of Toronto in July 2005 where leading experts from around the world presented findings from their work. Issue 1 (/ijcte/current.htm) of the Journal includes papers from Judith Torney-Purta and colleagues (USA), Kerry Kennedy (Hong Kong), Alan Sears (Canada), Murray Print and colleagues (Australia/Singapore), David Kerr (UK), Don Rowe (UK). The next edition of the Journal will be published in December 2005. Authors wishing to submit papers for publication should follow the guidance given at /ijcte/submissions.htm.

Citizenship Foundation Competitions (02/09/2005)

citizED is very pleased to support the Citizenship Foundation's National Youth Parliament and National Political Journalism competitions. The competitions are open for entries between 1 September and 15 December 2005. Students can tackle issues such as smoking in public places, ID cards, student top-up fees and voting at 16. Eurydice : Citizenship Education at School in Europe (09/07/2005)

This new Eurydice publication deals with the provision of citizenship education in schools and covers 30 European countries participating in the Eurydice Network. The comparative survey focuses on different national approaches to citizenship education and examines whether a European or international dimension has been officially incorporated into teaching of the subject in schools. The survey shows that an elaborate approach to provision in this area exists in most European countries. However, progress in the training of those who teach citizenship and more effective promotion of active participation by pupils in society at large are arguably two major challenges in the years ahead. citizED is very pleased to announce the publication of the 21st paper in its series of Briefing Papers for trainee teachers. Each of these papers provides a background to a particular topic and then a number of practical teaching ideas designed for use in the classroom as well as lessons that have a whole school and community focus. New Induction Pack - Resources for Teaching Citizenship (22/04/2005)

Peter Brett has written a new induction pack - Resources for Teaching Citizenship. This pack includes several categorised compilations of references (many to online resources). Peter writes 'not all education support materials produced by charities, organisations, commercial publishers or special interest groups, which claim to offer off-the-shelf solutions for teachers seeking Citizenship lesson planning short cuts, are of the same high quality. Teachers need a route map to where the good material is. This induction paper aims to serve this function, particularly in relation to the needs of beginning Citizenship teachers and their mentors but also hopefully for a wider audience.' Hilary Claire has reviewed 'Learning Citizenship' by Jenny Wales and Paul Clarke for the Primary Strand's Resource Reviews section. However, Hilary describes it as a 'transition' book originally designed for KS3 and suggests that secondary colleagues may like to read the review too.

New Tutor Induction Pack - KS2/3 Transition (07/01/2005)

A new Induction Pack for Teacher Tutors dealing with Education for Citizenship in relation to Transition from KS2 to 3 has been published. The induction pack has been written by Hilary Claire and Cathie Holden. The material aims to provide a context to consider transition from primary into secondary schools; identify and discuss the key issues involved in transition; provide exemplar material through which secondary trainees can consider how to build on work in primary schools; discuss approaches to effecting better transition and progression.

2 Teacher Mentor Packs published (29/11/2004)

Two more packs for Mentors of trainee teachers of citizenship education have been published today. The packs deal with School-based Training and Assessment of Pupils in Citizenship and have sections on 'Creating individualised training plans' and 'Strategies to develop Citizenship subject knowledge'. These packs are numbers 2 and 4 in the series (number 3 was published in September). More packs are due to be published soon. Please note that the packs are currently in draft form pending feedback from users.

OFSTED reports that 'Trainee teachers studying to teach citizenship in secondary schools make a significant contribution to setting up and planning the subject in their placement schools, according to a new report published by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) today'. Lit Review in ICT and Citizenship Ed (10/11/2004)

A literature review for Nesta Futurelab aims to provide an 'empirically informed and theoretically sound' basis for informing policy on teaching and learning Citizenship Education with ICT. While the review's author, Neil Selwyn, concludes that there is little, or no, high calibre empirical research focusing on technology and citizenship there is a burgeoning theoretical literature. So this review concentrates specifically on the place of technology as a topic of citizenship education and the roles that technology can play in teaching and learning within citizenship education. Citizenship Education Briefing Papers (01/10/2004)

A wide ranging series of briefing papers for trainee teachers in Citizenship Education are now available within the Cross Curricular strand. These cover subjects like; The Law; Global Citizenship; Questioning; The UN; The Media; Agenda 21; Teaching Controversial Issues; The Economy. Each paper has been written by an educator with expertise in the field. Each contains a summary of the issues and suggestions for ways to develop and deliver a curriculum for specified age groups.

Sir Bernard Crick to address conference (06/09/2004)

citizED is delighted to announce that Sir Bernard Crick will address the conference 'Mentors and Citizenship-Cordinators' to be held on 11th Oct 2004. Sir Bernard will be speaking on "Citizenship: Why are we doing it? how are we doing? where are we going?". The conference will be held at Canterbury Cathedral International Study Centre and is open to all mentors and citizenship co-ordinators in the South East of England. CPD Evaluation Tool available here (22/07/2004)

We are pleased to be able to offer the DfES' citizenship self-evaluation tool on the citizED website. The purpose of this tool is to 'help school leaders to take a more holisitic approach to citizenship education which links the components of; citizenship in the curriculum, citizenship in the school community and citizenship in the wider community beyond school.' Prof John Annette joins citizED Steering Group (12/07/2004)

citizED is delighted to announce that John Annette, Dean of Continuing Education and Professor of Citizenship & Lifelong Learning at Birkbeck College, University of London is joining the project's Steering Committee. Professor Annette is an authority on (and recently gave a very stimulating presentation at the citizED annual conference June 2004) on community involvement in citizenship education. Professor Annette will strengthen the project's expertise in this very important dimension of citizenship and teacher education.

Best resource for Post 16 citizenship on the net (17/06/2004)

The QCA website now has an excellent resource for Post-16 citizenship education, among the best available anywhere on the 'net, believes Prof. James Arthur, Director of citizED. The latest edition of the citizED newsletter, number 13, has just been published. This edition is full of items showing there is a fantastic amount of impressive work in citizenship education involving a very large number of talented professionals. New Research Paper (10/05/2004)

A new research paper by Ralph Leighton (Canterbury Christ Church University College) titled 'What you give is what you get: a preliminary examination of the influence of teacher perceptions of the role of Citizenship education on its delivery, status and effectiveness in schools' is published today. The paper can be found in the Commissioned Research Articles page. The abstract follows:

"Crick has said that reasons are more important than opinions; this paper arises from consideration of whether these can be separated and whether they are value free. Following a previous BSA paper (Leighton 2002) which identified and discussed disparate approaches to Citizenship provision in schools in preparation for its introduction as a National Curriculum subject, data have been gathered which demonstrate a range of views across those with and those without PGCE citizenship training. Six attitudinal categories are identified, their implications discussed, and some tentative conclusions offer…

Seminar - progression from Key Stage 2 (10/05/2004)

The Framework of Guidance for PSHE and Citizenship at KS 1 and 2 remains non-statutory, yet there is evidence that many primary teachers have embraced the challenge of PSHE/Citizenship with greater enthusiasm than their secondary colleagues. This seminar will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss with colleagues from primary schools, PGCE primary and undergraduate courses, the questions and issues relating to PSHE and Citizenship Education and progression from K S 2.
