She provides the context for the work, and a critical evaluation of how the teaching was received by her pupils. This is an invaluable resource for a topic which is often overlooked by teachers.

Having read so many articles by colleagues about the extensive effort and ingenuity required to raise the profile of Citizenship in our own surroundings, I thought it might be useful to focus on some of the positive actions we have used to overcome our ‘image issues’. I used to view the Assessment of Citizenship Education as a tender area of confusion when teaching our subject. Whilst it remains a contentious issue, we as custodians of good-practice can use assessment to improve the profile and credibility of Citizenship amongst our students and our Senior Management Teams. I’m fortunate enough to have overcome my own misunderstandings of assessment, experimented a little, and then formally presented my findings to an appreciative department head. Whilst everybody has to find a best fit for assessment in your own environments, by thoroughly planning this in a strategic format, assessment can act as a springboard for the credibility of Citizenship in schools.
